Quick Facts On Florida Solar Industry

Solar panel installations continue to boom in the U.S., and 2013 has been a great year for homeowners who have started to utilize the abundant solar energy to power their homes.

A quick fact, there are now over 13,000 megawatts (MW) of cumulative solar electric capacity operating in the U.S., enough to power more than 2.2 million average American homes.

Over 140,000 new solar installations in the U.S. in 2013 helped bring the nations total to over 445,000 photovoltaic (PV) systems operating today.

It is clear that we are moving into a new era, where we are adapting to cleaner use of energy to power our homes.

Florida has been known as “the sunshine state” because of its sunny, yet humid temperature. The state ranks 3rd in the nation for solar potential, but is ranked all the way down at 17th for solar installations in 2012.

There are 2 main reasons that Florida lags behind other states in the U.S., and they are:

  1. Florida has no renewable portfolio standard
  2. Florida does not allow power purchase agreements

In 2013, $81 million was invested in Florida to install solar panels on homes and businesses, so there is a clear trend in awareness and usage of clean solar energy.

A great fact for Florida homeowners and businesses, is that the average installation price for photovoltaic systems has fallen 28% in 2013, with national prices dropping steadily. It is comparable to the computer, which started off at a very steep price, and dramatically dropped over the years as awareness of its advantages grew.
In the graphic below, you can see that the average installation price for different markets have all shown a downward trend in cost.
